The very first part that comes out of the still is called the Heads or Foreshots. This is the part you don’t want to drink. This part of the alcohol is high in alcohol content sometimes around 80% ABV. This part of the alcohol also contains volatile compounds that you don’t want to consume. A good distiller can watch the gauges and know when its time to move to the hearts.
The Hearts is the middle part of the run. This is the sweet spot that you want to consume. This is the part that is put into barrels and aged into whiskey. A good distiller will watch the guages and know when it starts to move into the tails.
The last part of the distillation is called The tails. You don’t want to consume this part of the distillation. Contains unusable substances and is mostly water. The big distilleries that make millions of gallons will redistill this part of the run because they don’t have the time to stand there and watch the guages for optimum proof and taste.
The heads or Forshots make great santitizer we keep some in a spray bottle at all times. The heads and tails are what gives you the hang over when you are drinking. If you are drinking good quality alcohol from a good craft distiller you really shouldn’t have that problem. Of course if you drink a gallon or two you might get a hangover.
